Introduction:

  • Partial discharge is an electrical discharge that does not completely short-circuit the electrodes. The amplitude of this discharge is usually very small. But they do cause the performance of the insulating layer to continue to decline, and ultimately lead to the failure of electrical equipment.

  • Non-intrusive partial discharge detection provides a quick and simple method for identifying potential insulation faults that may cause power outages or personal injury.

  • The most practical techniques for non-invasive detection are based on detecting high-frequency parts of the electromagnetic spectrum and ultrasonic signals. This detector is specially developed for detecting electromagnetic wave and ultrasonic activity with simple operation.

  • Acoustic radiation in partial discharge activities will appear in the entire sound spectrum. It is possible to listen to sounds, but it depends on the hearing ability of each person.

  • Using instruments to detect ultrasonic waves in the sound spectrum has several advantages. The instrument is more sensitive than the human ear, has nothing to do with the operator, and works at frequencies above audio frequency, and has stronger directivity.

  • The most sensitive detection method is to use an ultrasonic sensor with a center frequency of 40 ~ 200kHz. This method can detect partial discharge activity very successfully.

  • When the partial discharge activity appears in the insulating layer of the high-voltage switchgear, it will generate high-frequency electromagnetic waves, which can only leak from the switchgear to the outer surface through the openings in the metal casing. These openings can be shell gaps or gaps around sealing gaskets and other insulating parts.

  • When electromagnetic waves propagate outside the switchgear, it will generate transient voltages on the grounded metal enclosure. The transient ground voltage (TEV) is in the range of a few millivolts to a few volts, and has a very short existence time, with a rise time of several nanoseconds.

  • The probe can be placed outside the switch cabinet in a non-invasive way to detect partial discharge activities.
